I think this is false, When a noise is made the sound is carried by the vibration of the object causing the air molecules around it to vibrate in a certain way, this in turn causes your ear drum to vibrate at a certain frequency which is how you hear the sound. An echo is simply the sound bouncing off an object and coming back, in doing this it is not reflected cleanly (think of a reflection on a pond or something) so some of the quality is lost.
